Resistance is Futile

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Damn! Why can’t I ever stop thinking?

This was my mantra at 7 am as I tried in vain to meditate.

Some days I’m able to get deep into the zone of a meditation where my thoughts slow and then stop for a while. These are the best meditations. I’m detached but present in the flow of Universal Mind. I feel a clarity and a sense that all is well – just the way things are. Perfectly imperfect.

I am aware of a connection to all life which gently gives way to a quiet joy. I ride the waves of this Universal flow as long as I can before thoughts get the better of me again. I take the quiet joy with me out into my day and go about my business.

Today I could not surf that wave. It was just one big thought after another knocking me off my spiritual surf board until I got tired of trying to climb back on and gave up. All I kept hearing was: I have work to do. I need to exercise. I’m running low on milk. Got to get to the ATM and deposit that check.

With each thought I squeezed my eyes tighter and said NO not now! But, they wouldn’t stop. I followed my breathing again and my thoughts slowed somewhat but not to the extent where I could make that connection to the soothing calmness I craved.

If You’ve Never Failed – You Haven’t Tried Hard Enough to Succeed

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work. Thomas Edison

Many successful people have failed while attempting to achieve their goals.

Actually, some of the most successful people on the planet have failed spectacularly! Did you know that Milton Hershey of the famed Hershey’s chocolates was fired from his first job as a printer, then went on to start and lose three candy companies and file for personal bankruptcy before finally starting the company that he became famous for? Can you imagine starting three companies that all failed?

Steven Jobs, the creator of the Apple computer began his career in his parent’s garage. Within a decade he’d built up a 2 billion dollar company. At age thirty Jobs joined the ranks of the unemployed when his own board of directors fired him. He went on to found another successful venture, Pixar, a company that creates animation for films such as Finding Nemo. He didn’t wallow in self pity after being fired. Oh, and by the way his old company Apple came back groveling twelve years later and hired him back. Can anybody say IPhone and Ipad?

Becoming successful takes fortitude and perseverance.

J.K. Rowling, the mega successful author of the Harry Potter series, was rejected by twelve different publishers before she found one to accept her manuscript. Even after agreeing to publish her first novel, they advised her to keep her day job. It seems no one had any faith in J.K. – but J.K. herself.

Even Stephen King’s first novel, Carrie was rejected by more than a dozen publishers before he was offered a contract. Did he give up and say I guess I’m not a writer? No.

Simon Cowell, the now hugely successful record and television producer of American Idol and other international talent shows, was forced to move back in with his parents in 1989 due to crushing debts he’d amassed when the record company he worked for had financial difficulties. He recovered from this setback and pursued his dream and his successful results are now broadcast around the world.

Two years ago I was privileged to interview entrepreneur, A.J.Khubani for a magazine I contributed to. Khubani is a fascinating business man whose company, Telebrands Corp, markets products with the red AS SEEN ON TV label, such as the PedEgg, the StickUp Bulb, and the GoDuster just to name a few. Khubani started his business right out of college with a few thousand dollars and it was NOT an overnight success. Over the years he had numerous product failures that cost him a bundle, and faced crippling lawsuits over patent infringement, but he never gave up and Telebrands came back even bigger and more profitable.

Twenty-five years later his company is worth $100 million. The most interesting part of our interview though was when he spoke of failing and almost losing his business, and his home in 2000. He responded that failure and challenging times help us to mature. He also said that if he had a chance he wouldn’t change a thing in his life; that’s now much he valued the experience of failing because of what he learned from it.

Successful people don’t allow failure to deter them from pressing on.

They have a vision for their lives, and use their failures as a lesson and stepping stone to get them to their goal. They don’t give up. If you want to succeed you have to be unshakeable, unquakeable, and unsinkable and say to yourself: Failure is not the end. It’s the beginning. I can and I will try again.

(Here’s a short video on some of the famous people who’ve failed. Click on the link.) Famous People Who’ve Failed

I’m not trying to make light of failure. In fact, I was inspired to write this article because too many people close to me are facing enormous challenges in their lives due failing or losing a job. Of course it’s devastating to fail. There’s the huge emotional tsunami one has to survive beside dealing with the potential realities like financial ruin, homelessness, putting food on the table, etc. The point I’m trying to make though is that we do and can go on. It might not be pretty for a while, or even a long time, but as long as you have breath in your body you have a chance to try again and to use all that you’ve learned from your failure to regain your footing and come back even better and happier in the second go round.

Fellow blogger, Dragos Roua, from his blog of the same name said it so well when he wrote in is superb article titled, “The Six Stages of  Failure”:

You learn by doing. You see what you did wrong, when and how, and start to fix it. It’s like a DIY session, only it’s for the entire Universe. You broke something in your reality but now you know exactly how you did it. It’s like you have a map on how to re-assemble the pieces, so you pick your tools and start fixing that stuff.

If you have a dream declare it boldly! Don’t be afraid of what anyone thinks or says to you. Many new ideas aren’t accepted at first. Just think of how many people must have laughed at the Wright brothers before they designed a plane that actually could fly.

Create a plan to achieve your goal and begin working it. Even if you’re first few attempts backfire – keep going. Remember, the people who dare to laugh are the ones most afraid of failure.

So, don’t cower in the corner fearing failure – go for it. And, remember if you fail or if you’ve been fired you’re in great company. And, after realizing your in great company, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back in there.

The  real meaning of success is not about fame and fortune. It’s what you learn on the journey getting there – particularly from your failures.

I’ve failed – and been fired from my first job. I’ve also left the finance industry and come back to the safety net of a “job” numerous times because my attempts in other industries haven’t worked out. But, I’m not giving up. Today is a new day – and another chance to try again. I’ve learned that failing is not the end of the world. I’ve also learned how important it is to plan and take small calculated steps toward your goals instead of jumping off a cliff all at once, and that’s what I’m doing now. Sometime soon, I will be self-employed writing/blogging, teaching others how to develop their intuition and extra sensory perception and doing intuitive and mediumistic consulting. Baby steps do lead to great strides.

What about you? Have you ever failed? What did you learn from it?

Global Healing June 21, 2010: Urgent Call to Action

Sunday, June 20th, 2010
Gaia's Kiss
Image by charissa1066 (away) via Flickr

On June 21, the Summer Solstice, at noon in your time zone, please offer your prayers to heal our planet particularly the waters off the Gulf of Mexico.

Visualize yourself cradling the earth to your heart. Send love and blow a kiss to our planet just as you would to someone dear to you. See the Gulf Coast waters as pristine and cleared of all  the oil.

This is a global event organized by www.healingsounds.com:

HEALING THE WATERS OF THE WORLD

Solstice Global Toning on Monday June 21st 12:00 noon in your time zone

Let us collectively link up with the heart of  Gaia, mother Earth, for healing the waters of the world, focusing on the Gulf oil leakage as an entry point

On the longest day of the year at the peak of the solar energy, let us put the power of collective prayer into collaborating with mother Earth to co-create healing and harmony between the planet and us, her children. Though some humans behave in ways that may ignore the sacredness of her body, many of us are interested in living in ways that honor and revere this precious planet. Let us unite in focused prayer, offering our gratitude for the gift of this Earth and all that is provided to us with such grace and abundance.

For those of you who have seen the movie “Avatar”, we have an image of a sincere individual linking his heart with the heart and Spirit of life, to bring about right action during a distressing situation. We collectively have the power to do this as well.

During this time of intentional prayer, first imagine your heart synchronizing in rhythm with the heart of the Earth and all her amazing creatures and elements. Then, if possible, add the power of sound, using your voice and the spirit of your breath, creating the sound of the heart, “AH” as you align and send your healing prayers on this Global Tone.

If it is appropriate, please go to the AH Toning Chamber at the Temple of Sacred Sound to enhance the power of this Solstice Global Toning.

This sonic prayer will flow like a wave of cleansing, healing waters over the planet as compassionate beings in each time zone link up with their fellow beings to bring love across the Earth.

Let us join together in Light & Love through Sound this June 21st to create balance and healing on our beloved planet.

(Note from Angela: The event is for global toning, but if you don’t feel comfortable toning you don’t have to. Meditation and prayers for seeing the earth and our waterways clean and healed is enough.)

Meditation Mondays

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

I’m participating in a fun collaborative blogging event with Lillian-Juda Leonard Beach at her beautiful site: The Mini Beach Bird.

She has a series running called Meditation Mondays.

Several bloggers have contributed their favorite meditations.

Each week new meditations will be posted for readers to try. As most of you know I’m a former meditation instructor – so this is truly music to my ears. If I had my way meditation would be part of the curriculum in public school.

I’ve contributed a meditation to week 2 of her series titled: Seven Simple Steps to A Great Meditation. Click here to check it out. and all the other great meditations collected there.

I’m sure you’re going to really enjoy this and love trying the many different meditations that have been submitted.

Thank you Lillian-Juda for arranging this wonderful event and for including me. I am truly honored.

DNA Is Not Destiny

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

“If you believe you can, or if you believe you can’t, – you’re right.” Henry Ford

Have you ever wondered how our thoughts affect physical reality

Or just how negative belief patterns can contribute to illness?

And what the mechanics are behind this?

I learned about this fascinating topic when I read, “The Biology of Belief,” by Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. a former Stanford University biologist whose work focused on cloning.

He writes that unlike what most of us learned in life science classes in elementary school, the nucleus of a cell is not the brains of the cell. The membrane, or what he calls the “mem-brain,” which is outer skin of the cell, is the actual brain. It’s this outer skin that turns on the release of certain proteins in the cell depending on the information that the “mem-brain” receives from its environment.

This is a real break through in understanding how thoughts control your life, and physiology because what Lipton is saying is that cellular function is not hard wired by DNA, but influenced by stimuli, or thought fields, in the environment. The stimuli, or thought forms trigger one of two states; growth or protection, and a cell cannot be in both states simultaneously. It’s either growing, or it’s not.

Lipton gives the example of how thought energy can activate or inhibit the cell’s function.

When you’re scared, or fearful your body produces cortisol the stress hormone. When the stress hormone is registered by the cell membrane it goes into the protection response and puts up a barrier to keep out foreign substances – even nutrients – which it likens to invaders. Over time if the level of cortisol remains high that cell will starve and become sick, or die because the protection response is one of shutting down and barricading itself against the enemy.

It is the opposite of growth. When the body is in a relaxed state it’s in a growth state and the membrane easily allows nutrients to pass through to nourish the cell.

What this shows is that our thoughts, or state of mind, directly affects us on a cellular level.

If we let fears and negative beliefs and thought patterns control us we inhibit our cellular growth and can eventually produce disease, or dis-ease, in our bodies and our minds. And, it makes no difference if the fears or beliefs are unfounded either, because the cell will go into protection response regardless of whether the thoughts have a basis in truth, or not.

Also, we can’t shout, “I’m fine!” if deep down we don’t believe it. Either way, our deeply ingrained subconscious beliefs win out every time. So, it’s really important to weed our minds of unfounded fears and beliefs if we want to succeed. By learning to be conscious of our thoughts we also take control of our health.

Here are three simple practices you can use to tackle reprogramming your beliefs, reduce stress and keep the cortisol at bay:

1. Turn off negative mind chatter and clear negative belief patterns by meditating daily. If you get into the habit of doing it everyday you’ll see a dramatic reduction in your stress level and tremendous increase in your happiness quotient. If your looking for a simple meditation technique read my post titled,  “Seven Simple Steps to A Great Meditation.

2. To change belief patterns work with affirmations. The best book I’ve ever read on using affirmations is, “You Can Heal Your Life,” by Louise Hay. I highly recommend it. Writing positive affirmations or repeating them helps to calm the stressed mind.

3. Exercise regularly especially outdoors. Exercise releases endorphins which elevate the mood helping to keep you in a better mood. Being outdoors in nature is really soothing to the soul. I find that I like to repeat affirmations when I go for a walk.

I’d recommend trying all three and one more thing – turn off your cell phone and blackberry once in a while. I find having mine on 24/7 for my job very very stressful.

Are you aware of any limiting beliefs that are  affecting your health, or holding you back in your life?  We all carry around the baggage of limiting beliefs – what’s yours?

Odyssey to Wholeness

Awaken To The Truth of Who You Really Are

Friday, May 28th, 2010

“What I try to stress, to those who are prepared to listen, is that the material is only the reflection, the shadow, the husk and not the reality. The material exits because it is animated by the spirit. When spirit withdraws, matter disintegrates. Spirit is master, matter is servant. Spirit is king, matter is commoner. This is the great lesson that millions have still to learn in your world. They give priority to matter and very little attention to spirit. ” Excerpt from the book,  Light From Silver Birch. Silver Birch, a native American, was channeled through the medium Maurice Barbanell in England up until 1981 when Maurice Barbanell passed away. His channeled teachings were published in a series of 9 books.

Are you going through tumultuous changes in your life? Facing life changing decisions?

Do you feel like you might just be on the precipice of something, but you don’t know what? Are you unsure about the future and your next steps?

Many many people are going through some of the most challenging times of their lives right now. Some of have lost jobs, or lost homes and may have even lost someone close to them. There seems to be so much pain in the world with poverty, hunger, wars, terrorism and anarchists. Sometimes it feels as if our whole world is shaking like a wet dog flinging the water from his coat. Maybe all this shaking and quaking of our institutions and lifestyle is a good thing? Perhaps it will shake off the caked on mud and reveal a new more balanced way of living?

Could this huge global shake-up be meant as a wake-up call?

Is it perhaps, time for many of us to realize that we have become too attached to materialism? To become aware  that we truly are spiritual beings having a human experience? Maybe the pain and crises many people are facing now are meant to bring them to their knees so that they reemerge with an awareness of their true spiritual nature?

Could it be time to go within and stop looking outside of ourselves for the answers? Maybe the crumbling of our culture of conspicuous consumption is causing so much pain because it’s signaling that it’s time to awaken to the fact that worshiping materialism has cut us off from our true source?

I certainly think so. I also think that until the vast majority of mankind believe that spirit is what makes all things possible, not matter, and that we are connected by the spiritual essence that animates each and every one of us we will never end all the hatred and violence toward one another and our earth.

Last week I sent out this tweet on Twitter: How much good undertaken by good people will it take to override all the violence and hatred in the world? Be the good!

I really believe we are at a critical juncture in our history and that we have a huge choice to make here. It’s time to awaken to the truth that we are spiritual beings, and to do good, be good and spread good which is to say we need to focus on exuding love in our world.

I found this thought provoking video called Awakening on You Tube – it’s short. Give it a look see.. \”Awakening\” from You Tube

What do you think? Are we at a critical juncture? Do you feel a change taking place within? Do you feel a need to search for answers and take up a spiritual practice such as meditation?  Let us know – share your comments with us.
